The Invoice (NF) is a document used whenever we carry out a commercial transaction — purchase, sale, or services rendered. It can also be used for donations, loans, and shipping goods. Its purpose is to record commercial transactions between businesses or individuals and for tax collection.
Now that we've defined the NF, let's understand the Electronic Invoice (NF-e).
The Electronic Invoice serves the same purpose as the conventional NF — it records purchase, sale, or service transactions between businesses or individuals. To provide greater control over NF-e issuance, a digital signature was included when it is issued.
This digital certificate guarantees the authenticity of this tax document for the buyer and for tax authorities.

With globalization and the significant increase in commercial transactions, Tax Administration began struggling to track and verify these transactions.
With the introduction of Constitutional Amendment 42, Article 37, item XXII, Tax Administration was able to act in an integrated manner, sharing registries and tax information.
In 2005, State Treasury Departments and large corporations came together to meet this Amendment's goals.
This alliance was called the National Meeting of Tax Administrators (ENAT), which aimed to define and roll out the NF-e system, reduce operating costs, standardize procedures, and integrate tax systems across states and all three levels of government.
