Main features of the Electronic Invoice

The Electronic Invoice (NF-e) is a tax document meant to replace and modernize the old, paper-based way of registering transactions between interested parties, since it is transmitted over the internet.

This tax document's security system includes a digital signature from the NF-e's issuer, which serves as a legal and tax guarantee for the recipient.

How the Electronic Invoice came to be

To meet the constitutional requirements, several National Meetings of Tax Administrators (ENAT) were held, bringing together the heads of federal, state, Federal District, and capital city tax administrations.

These meetings aimed to find joint solutions across the three levels of Government to promote greater administrative integration, standardization, better quality information, reduced workload costs, and a focus on effective oversight — with a greater chance of carrying out coordinated, integrated tax actions through the cross-referencing of tax information.

These meetings led to the development and rollout of the Electronic Invoice.
